Love In a Cup 2011

By Ann Eastick | October 16, 2011

In 2009 Love in a cup donated $1500 for our 3rd well to "Tear" for allocation to EFICOR (an agricultural training scheme) for farmers in Dungapur District, Rajasthan, India. This area is very dry, and infertile. Wells were deepened in the small villages, providing clean water for 15-20 families and farmers underwent training to learn better farming practices to optimise use of their land.

We have recently received back from "Tear", 2 human interest stories of farmers in this District and how their families' lives are being greatly improved from the provision of clean water.

1. Kala Kachare, from village Thaiyatha, aged 57 has 5 children. By cultivating and irrigating, he increased his yield of tomatoes, radishes, onions, ginger and turmeric, he now has sufficient fresh produce to feed his family and sell excess at the markets, improving the lives of his family.

2. Mohaniel Parmar from village Benfaia sanne. Using old traditional methods of farming yielded very little from his dry and infertile land. His new training has given new knowledge and he was able to set up an irrigation system from the open well in his village. He doubled his yield of 200 kg of wheat and 100 kg of maize in 2009 to 500 kg wheat and 200 kg of maize in 2010.

Love in a Cup's commitment to turn "coffee into water" enables subsistence farmers to turn water into food - income - better lifestyle - better health.

The October "Tear" Newsletter also featured a small article regarding a water and sanitation project in Bonbota village Ethiopia, through the Kale Heywet Church to which we donated $1500 representing our 10th Well (matching grant 2010) This project installed a gravity fed water system that leads from the natural springs down to the village. It has nine tap stands (our donation provided 1 tap stand). People can now walk up to the springs instead of having to walk 4 kilometres round trip for a container of water. Community members are trained to build and maintain their own water and sanitation facilities.
