Phillip Island Track Day

By Paul King | March 30, 2011

On the long weekend of the 14th of March a few of us from church made up a group of 6 riders who travelled to Phillip Island race track out side of Melbourne to take part in a "Track Day" along with 154 other riders from various States to ride our sports bikes on what has been described as the best motorcycle race track in the world. What transpired can only be described as a fantastic day as we experienced a magic weekend with sunny skies, no off shore wind and an opportunity to follow (albeit somewhat slower!!) in the footsteps of some of the world's greatest riders like Michael Doohan, Casey Stoner, and Valentino Rossi! The riders were grouped according to speed and talent with the "slower" riders reaching speeds of around 220-230 klms an hour and the faster bikes reaching 250-270 klms per hour down the straight. Photos are of Garry (Kawasaki ZX6), Pastor Paul (Kawasaki ZRX 1200R) and Wayne (YamahaTRX 850).

Note Paul's helmet advertising Knightsbridge Baptist Church. Prior to arriving at the circuit there was a lot of talk about following one another at reasonable speeds, but the moment we were waved onto the track, the intensely competitive spirit of all three riders surfaced and as our pit crews brought out the stop watches. At the end of the day it was Garry fastest, followed by Wayne and then Paul (with a list of excuses a mile long).

On the Tuesday we packed up our bikes on the trailers and drove back to Adelaide tired, but elated and full of enthusiasm to go back next year.

Want to join us? All you need is a relatively fast sports bike, full race leathers, around $290 for Track fees, another $100 for accommodation and a heap of passion for speed. Talent optional.

Contact Paul on 0414422178 if you would like to come. (Exact dates to be finalised but some time in March)
